So I just realized I’ve been out of the country for over six months now. I figured I should take a look at the original “tentative itinerary” I set up before I left and see how I’m doing. Here’s the results:
- Departure date – Almost on target!
- Original plan: Leave mid-April
- Actual: Flew out of DFW (Dallas) on May 4
- First stop – change of plans
- Original: 3 weeks in Italy
- Actual: 4 weeks in Spain (same difference but cheaper…and more pork)
- Second stop – back on track
- Original: Meet a friend in Morocco
- Actual: Did Morocco alone (but with an unhelpful guidebook). Met friend in Egypt instead.
- Egypt & the Sinai – got stuck in the Sinai
- Original: Minimum 2 weeks in Egypt and an overland border crossing into Israel
- Actual: About a full month in Egypt and then the overland border crossing into Israel, quickly followed by a trip to Petra, Jordan
- Israel – too difficult to leave & now way behind schedule
- Original: 2 months on a kibbutz
- Actual: Quickly ruled out a kibbutz and took an internship instead, for nearly 4 months
- After Israel – major mideast fail!
- Original: Ferry to Cyprus, followed by Greece, Hungary, Croatia, Turkey
- Actual: Uh, I didn’t do any of those. Instead, I flew direct to Mumbai, India
And that brings us to today. My original plan had me arriving in India in late September, early October I think (though I honestly don’t know how I expected to squeeze in all those countries). I was only going to spend a brief amount of time in northern India and then head straight for Nepal, but because it turned out I had a friend who was going to be in India (hi Vivek!) by the time I got to this part of the world, I opted to instead show up here.
According to my original plan, I was going to head to Southeast Asia and then Australia (to hopefully find a decent paying job). A few months back I learned about some other travelers who are planning to be in Bangkok for Christmas, so that became a sort of goal en route to Sydney for New Year’s Eve. Now that I’m in India, I’m not sure it’s entirely possibly to leave this country before, uh, 2015? This place is big! (Don’t worry Mom & Dad, I’ve only got a 6-month visa so I can’t stay forever…)
So, after today, I really don’t know where I’m going to go, nor do I know how long I’ll be here. I’ll reevaluate after I’ve done some solo traveling in India to see how I find this place. And then, depending upon the time of year (and a few other external factors), I’ll find somewhere to go. Suggestions welcome.

it’s Juhu. not Jehu. it seems like you’ve been in India for long enough to know that.

Hi Adam, seriously India and China are the two countries that are too huge to be covered in a few weeks.. you could be traveling for months within those two countries itself, lol… You should head on to the South East Asia region. ie. Thailand, Cambodia [(visit the Angkor Wats there :)], Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore. Then drop in to Indonesia and you might want to go north towards the East ie. Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong?
Haha, just a suggestion.. anyway, didn’t someone once wrote, “The best laid schemes of mice and men / Go oft awry”? Just go with the flow, and enjoy the experiences :)

I think it’s great that you’re being so spontaneous. What made you choose to leave the ME and travel to India instead? ~Andrea

That’s just the nature of travel isn’t it. Can’t wait to see where your travels take you next.

It always takes longer than you think to travel through countries, we have these optimistic ideals that we’ll be in museums every day breezing through our travels but long term travel takes so much longer.
My advice is to throw the itinerary out the door and take each day as it comes. I did that a long time ago and it’s made the experience so much more enjoyable.

Love that you’ve been going with the flow along the way. Been a while since we chatted (probably since the beginning of both of our trips!). Enjoy every moment in India (currently tops my list of places to go next) and hope to meet in Oz if I’m still here when you get here…eventually ;-)

I think you’ve hit some great place for this go round and the places you skipped like Croatia and Greece are for vacations down the line . . . I think the plan is good and you’ve stuck pretty well to it. You find you want to spend more or less time in one place, cool. Great pics

A great way to have fun during trips is to stop making plans and just go for spontaneity. So even if the original plan did not push through and you ended somewhere unexpected, the good thing is you were able to discover something new and different.

I am not a fan of anything Australian between 15-Dec and 15-Jan, unless you like very crowded and very expensive! (or if SYD on New Years is really on your bucket list). NZ is perfect that time of year, or considering your schedule, just stay where you are and do Australia later:-).
Love the comparison of plans and actuality. Can relate fully:-).

Japan!
And, uh, I’m sticking to warm weather for as long as I can. I’m pretty sure I’m going to skip out of northern India pretty soon and head south.

I learned that going with the flow is a lot more fun and less stressful than going crazy trying to keep your itinerary. Have fun!

Ahh! I’m a bit sad to have skipped Italy as well. But I know I’ll make it there sooner rather than later.
