How to Make Life More Exciting

This weekend, it finally felt like that elusive Berlin summer. Ask anyone who’s ever been to Berlin (or lived in Berlin) and they’ll always go on and on about the Berlin summer. Long days when the sun is up until almost 11pm, drinking cheap Späti beers by the canals in Kreuzberg, bar-hopping in Neukölln and dancing until sunrise. Earlier this year, when I adopted my new “Fuck it, I’m 30” philosophy, I also came up with a secret plan. I called it “An Adventure Every Day” which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. In my quest for a non-boring life, I committed myself to try new things, explore new places and add a little bit of crazy to each of my days.

From meeting strangers for coffee dates to checking out new clubs with my best friends, it’s been a fun experiment. And one I plan to continue. I’ve been standing still for a few years now—still doing exciting things, but also I’ve gotten a bit more laid-back and a little less adventurous over time. My “Adventure Every Day” plan was a way to jumpstart my life again, to keep on doing exciting things. The longer we sit still, the harder it is to get moving again.

How to Make Life More Exciting

I’m not saying life is boring, but complacency can be. For me, I’ve always tried to do new things, to experiment, to make new friends and to go new places—that’s how I add excitement where I can. I’m not a hardcore risk-taker, but I don’t mind going out on a limb every now and then. If you’re looking for ways to make life more exciting, try some of things I’ve learned on my own adventures:

1. Don’t be afraid to talk to strangers

Whomever made the rule that all children should be taught not to talk to strangers has seriously inhibited our growth as a part of humanity. I’m not saying go talk to every stranger, but to just not be afraid. Read the situation and be a little more fearless.

2. Go to events alone

I can’t tell you how many times I go out alone in Berlin. It’s not that I don’t have any friends, it’s just that sometimes other people are busy. As an added bonus, when you go out alone, it’s surprisingly much easier to talk to strangers.

3. Make lists of goals & things to do

Making to do lists is one of my favorite pastimes. You don’t have to do everything on the list, but just writing out the goals and crossing off the ones you complete is an experience enough. When I set out to have an adventure every day, it was a matter of writing down all the restaurants, parks, clubs and places in Berlin that I haven’t yet seen—and slowly but consistently getting that shit done.

4. Collect everything – flyers, pamphlets, brochures, stickers…

Step into any bar bathroom and you’ll find walls plastered with stickers and logos. Flyers and brochures are usually available in stands near the toilets or in hotel lobbies or at major attractions. Use these flyers and pamphlets as a starting off point—collect them and do the research around them. In the past month, I’ve picked up flyers for a queer music festival in Berlin, an English-comedy night, a gay yoga group and a listing of all the outdoor cinema screenings.

5. Live shamelessly

A little shamelessness never really hurt anyone; break out of your comfort zone and see what happens. You might just like it. I’ve played around with all sorts of things these past few months that I might normally be embarrassed by—from dancing without pants to dying my hair blue.

An Adventure Every Day

You don’t need to do something new every day, but little adventures can go a long way into making life that much more exciting. Tell me below in the comments what some of your recent adventures have been, and what you’re doing to add some spice into life…

Clearly you and I think alike because not two hours ago Phil and I were discussing renewing our “adventure every month” that we did in MA way back when, except now in Texas. We have to go with monthly w/those kids of ours ;) Love this!
