It’s the European capital of cool. Berlin as a city has become synonymous not just as a place for Europe’s coolest clubs, shops, cafés and start-ups, but just the word Berlin has come to signify a specific type of style. It’s that Berlin look – that Berlin style. It shows up not just in how the people here dress and style themselves, but in the attitude, the design, the mindset.

Berlin’s 20th century history has come to define the city’s attitude and style today. History has proved this one of the most resilient cities with a penchant for risk, adventure and freedom. It’s that freedom that shows through in the style you see on the streets of Berlin now. In Berlin, you can be who you want, when you want, where you want. And it’s just that attitude—that style—that makes Berlin so vibrant.

How to get that Berlin look - Berlin Style Blog

To get that special Berlin look, though, it’s not so much about vibrancy in the street fashion – but about practicality. Berliners are famously curt, preferring straightforward greetings and conversations. This Berlinerisch is reflected in the style, too.

When going out to a club in Berlin, it’s not how you look – it’s how you act. Your shoes should be comfortable and practical – what you need to dance, not to show off. Your outfits: simple, but stylish. Warmth is important when it’s cooler, and layers of thick, oversized accessories and coats make up the most common winter outfits. A lightweight denim jacket or bomber jacket goes a long way year-round.

Where to Find Berlin Fashion

Two years ago when the Bikini Berlin concept mall opened up, it was heralded as the revitalization of “West Berlin.” For a long time, Berlin’s coolness emanated from the east, but as the city has grown and unified, the west (especially the area around Zoologischer Garten) has become more and more popular. And, surprisingly: more and more cool! With the C/O Gallery, he Helmut Newton Foundation and Bikini Berlin complex with the 25hours Hotel (and their super-cool Monkey Bar) and the concept shopping mall, this area has become one of my favorite Berlin neighborhoods.

What’s so great about this area, though, isn’t the fact that it’s all so new, clean and still stylish. Like so much of everything that takes place in Berlin, history and the local culture is so important. So, with that in mind, the shops of Bikini Berlin are overwhelmingly local businesses. The design-focused concept mall regularly runs events and parties in their open space (everything from sneaker markets to VOGUE fashion parties).

Bikini Berlin

Some of the best local Berlin designers and brands have stores inside the Bikini Berlin complex, e.g. the Kreuzberg-designed MYKITA glasses and the leather manufactory MABBA, both representing “Handmade in Berlin.” But if you want that true Berlin look, simply visit the concept mall on a weekend to get a sense of that Berlin street style. The mall is one of the best places in Berlin for people-watching, especially for the fashion-minded.

Inside, there’s a large, floor-to-ceiling glass window with a direct view into the Berlin Zoo’s monkey exhibit—a popular hangout for a date. And, up on the rooftop, there’s a viewing platform looking out over the zoo and the rest of Tiergarten park.

Check the Bikini Berlin website for the exhibitions and events that take place in the mall. In September, they’re hosting the global VOGUE’s Fashion Night Out.
