Documenta
The first two “festivals” in this list – documenta and Art Cologne – are more like fairs and art exhibitions. The Documenta, however, is also a well-known German art festival which is held every five years in Kassel, Germany. This city was almost laid to waste during the Second World War, and with the Bundesgartenschau or Federal Garden Show of 1955, Kassel locals attempted to revitalise their ailing culture by launching the first Documenta exhibition.
A success, it had focused on abstract art and the works of those artists known as “Entartete Kunst.” It showcased the so-called degenerate art, works suppressed during the Nazis, and influential painters such as Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky. The Documenta is held for 100 days, which is why it’s also called the “The Museum of 100 Days.”
Art Cologne
The Art Cologne presents 20th and 21st Century art in Cologne Germany. It’s an art fair for international art galleries. It started with only 18 galleries in 1967, and at the time, it was the oldest art fair of its kind. Today, more than 200 galleries and 2,000 diverse artists participate in Art Cologne each spring. All kinds of artists present their work during this fair and from its founding became one of the important international addresses for such art.
Berlin International Film Festival
The Berlin International Film Festival is the world’s second-largest film festival after the Cannes film festival. It draws in more than 19,000 film professionals from 115 countries, showcasing films ranging from big international movies, independent and art house productions, movies aimed at younger audiences, German productions, and more experimental films. This year’s 67th Berlinale festival is held between February 9 to 17, 2017.
Videonale
Meanwhile, from February 17 to April 2, the Videonale will be held in Germany. One of the world’s oldest and most renowned video art festivals traces its roots to 1984, and celebrates the video art work of established artists and up and coming ones.
Rock am Ring and Rock im Park
This June 2 to June 7, two iconic German rock festivals will be held simultaneously: the Rock am Ring or “Rock in the Ring” and Rock im Park or “Rock in the Park—both taking place in Nuremberg. At each venue, the same musicians perform from a range of musical genres. This is one of the biggest music festivals in the world drawing in crowds numbering more than 160,000.
Germans have displayed a great commitment to the arts during adversity and a tumultuous 20th century. To celebrate their artistic heritage, they’ve founded many momentous art festivals on strong artistic principles.
