If I’ve learned one thing about Edinburgh since arriving on the 29th, it’s that this city knows how to have a good time. The New Year’s Eve celebration called Hogmanay is one of Scotland’s biggest festivals. And unlike most NYE celebrations, this one is three days long!
The Torchlight Procession is always on the 30th and is the opening event for the Hogmanay parties. Last night, I snagged a £10 torch and made the walk from Edinburgh’s Old Town up to Calton Hill. It was a fire hazard for sure, but I safely made it through the evening event without lighting myself or any other passersby on fire! SUCCESS.

Thanks Cheryl! Hope you enjoyed your holidays in Iceland :) HNY!
Happy New Year! I lived not far from Edinburgh for about a year and didn’t make it to the city to see in the new year. Thanks for taking me with you! Awesome photos!
HNY Charli! I’m curious – did you celebrate New Year’s in a different city of Scotland then? I wonder how it might compare…
Hey Adam,
Happy new year!! Excellent photos and video. Thanks for sharing your fun here :)
Thank you Juliet. Happy New Year to you too!!!
This was a highlight of my New Year’s last year! So glad you got to experience it.

Looks pretty epic for sure man! Glad you didn’t light yourself or anyone else on fire! There is something very ancient or medieval to this torchlight procession. So cool.
Haha thanks Ryan. And yes I was totally worried about setting someone on fire. I couldn’t help but making medieval connections during the procession. It almost felt spiritual actually, which made it really an incredible experience. What a way to celebrate New Year’s!
Looks like you had a great time in Edinburgh for hogmanay :) I stupidly forgot the torchlight procession was on… so missed going to it, did watch the fireworks from my flat though :)
Haha, that’s funny you forgot about the Torchlight procession! But I guess we all do that in our own hometowns. Jealous you had an indoor viewing for the fireworks – it was a wee bit cold that night ;)
