I don’t know.
But I’ll continue to say it.
There’s just something special about the city. There’s definitely a lot of hype, but much of the hype is actually true. Berlin is home to apartments for every budget. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of green spaces and public parks. The city is stuffed with some of the most creative people in the world. And for tourists, there are easy apartments to rent if you can afford a holiday rental.
With a nightlife that would rival any other city in the world, and even an up-and-coming food & culinary scene, Berlin has more to offer every day. And as a growing and developing city, it’ll only become more and more. More of what? I don’t know. But the city is going up, that much is for sure.
I love Berlin for its atmosphere. The city feels so alive and so full of energy. With such an array of international expats, the city has so many amazing things to offer. It’s not perfect, but nothing really is. There are certainly problems—financial and demographic—but every great city has had its problems. Hopefully Berlin and its millions of residents can make it work.
Is Berlin the coolest city in the world? Maybe not for you. Maybe even not for me every day. But today, right now, I feel it’s one of the most amazing and most interesting cities of the world. And if you’re planning to visit, be sure to check out my personal travel tips & suggestions.
But if you ask me if Berlin is the coolest city in Europe, I’d probably have a more difficult time answering. There are bigger cities with as much hype and just as many cool things to do. Berlin is certainly one of the coolest, most hip cities in Europe—and yes, the world, too—but it’s an enigma as much as any city can be.
There is something about Berlin. It is hard to put a finger on exactly what it is, but is sort of just feels cool. I actually took a Segway tour while here and bar-none it was one of the coolest experiences of my life. So much history – a lot of it dark – that it has created a real sense of “hip”.
Berlin’s history is incredible, isn’t it? I frequently have to remind myself where I am because it just feels so unreal.
I’m sold! The German Tourism Board should totally give you lots of money for this post :)
Agreed!!!
I visited Berlin a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it, despite the freezing rainy weather! I think you’re right it has a really amazing atmosphere with lots of very different areas to explore. I had an amazing night out in East Berlin!
I was in Berlin last week and met up with a friend who lives just a few minutes walk from Warschauer Straße U & S stations, who I’d not seen for about 5 years.
We went for dinner and he chose a restaurant that was about 5 minutes walk away. On the walk from the station I couldn’t believe how much the area has changed… it’s now filled with fabulous shops, restaurants and bars. The area has been re-rejuvenated and brought to life. The area was buzzing with people enjoying themselves… and this was on a Monday night.
Berlin really is something special… if you’ve never visited before do so soon. You’ll be glad you did, because you’ll want to return again to experience even more of it.
I can’t even imagine how much it would’ve changed in the 5 years since you were last here. I feel like even now the city is changing at a fast pace.
The energy of Berlin is just so incredible—it’s great that you get to see it so alive!
Hi Adam,
interesting to read your post about life in Berlin. I lived there for several years back in the 90s, had a great time. But I gradually also came to realize the limitations of the place. I guess this is true though wherever you live.
Right now I’m living in Bangkok and travelling in SE Asia. Nonetheless I still have a soft spot for Berlin and still have friends there. I need to get back there sometime – it’s been a few years now, and see how it’s changed.
Enjoy Berlin and make the most of it!
Hey Kevin!
Thanks so much for your kind note and comment. I think the longer I spend here, the more the city makes me think. I’m looking forward to taking a 6-week break from Berlin next month—should help me get a refreshing look of the city again.
And Bangkok is an incredible city! One of my favorites in the world. Thanks again!
Adam
I’ve never been to Berlin, but now I want to go there..
Let me know if you visit – I’ve got a ton of tips for what is probably Europe’s coolest city!
