Texas Tastes so Good!

This blog might seem incongruous with my recent posts from Europe, but it’s not. I had a “Texas Burger” yesterday in Berlin and it got me thinking — I miss Texas and all its yummy foods!

Okay, so it’s not really Texas that I’m talking about—more like the most brilliant blend of cultural and food. When I visited Texas last summer (one of the many places I call home), besides seeing old friends & family, the highlight was easily the food. Food is a big part of why I travel so it’s only natural. And the special, unique cuisine of Texas is one of my all-time American favorites. And not just because it reminds me of home. But because the food—whether it’s BBQ or Tex-Mex—is damn good!

The topic of “food in Texas” has come up repeatedly in my personal life as of late. This June marks one year since I last visited Texas so a trip home is overdue. I’ll probably start to plan a trip to Texas for later in the summer. There’s nothing quite like a Texas summer full of long hot days, midnight swims and poolside BBQs. To whet my appetite, I’ve gone through some of my old Texas photos and found some of the delicious foods I miss so much.

 

My Texas Food Favorites

Tex-Mex, I love you! It’s a long-standing tradition for Americans abroad to complain about the lack of quality Tex-Mex food in foreign places. And while I love living abroad, of all the things I miss most from my home country, it’s probably Tex-Mex food at the top. Burritos, enchiladas, tortilla chips…. It’s not America’s most obvious cuisine (burgers, pizza and McDonald’s probably top that list) but it’s certainly our most delicious!

To try to satiate my desire, I regularly visit some of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Berlin. My friend Ali, from Ali’s Adventures created a useful Tex-Mex guide but even still the restaurants don’t live up to the original (though Maria Bonita certainly lives up to the hype).

In summer, it’s all about the snow cones! Growing up in Texas, I lived down the street from a snow cone stand which I regularly visited. Crushed ice with flavored syrup, I love you. Nothing keeps you more cool during the 100°F heat!

Backyard barbecue pot-lucks. Southern states like Texas have a reputation for friendliness, and while that’s not always the case — I do firmly believe in southern hospitality. Especially in Texas! Growing up in Texas, I always loved our neighborhood barbecues and backyard picnics. And what is a barbecue without some quality, home-made deviled eggs?! Boring, that’s what. I used to eat these things by the dozen.

Drinking in Texas was never really my forté. Though I won’t lie: tequila has always been a favorite spirit of mine and that’s undoubtedly because of my Texas roots. But these days when I go home, it’s less about the margaritas and more about the local craft brews. The most popular beer in Texas has to be Shiner and that’s a good thing — because it’s a great quality beer.

    Thanks for the link, it was a fun 3 months trying Berlin’s Mexican food. And lucky for me, a guy from the US recently started a taco truck in Freiburg, and it’s delicious!

    This is so cool Adam! I told my boyfriend last week that when we visit Texas we have to eat deviled eggs…so I guess you made everything right :-)

      Haha that’s awesome, Anna! It’s such a simple food and it’s eaten all over, but I always tie it to my memories in Texas :)

    I miss The Salt Lick! Best BBQ ever! And I’m taking about the original location in Driftwood of course ( about 20 min outside of Austin ). Family style and BYOB ….. mmmmmm.

    Only thing I can do without is the deviled eggs, everything else I can relate to. I’m def. going to be missing some of my favorite foods here when I take my trip in a month!

  7. As I Texan myself you have got me craving some “home cookin'”. Luckily there is actually some pretty good TexMex available here in Chiang Mai but still, it isn’t quite 100%. Now, a Texas burger in Berlin seems interfering too. I have some good friends I Berlin and the more they talk about it, the more I want to visit. Maybe soon!

      Yep Jonathan – I think one thing just about all Texas can agree on is how amazing the food is. Interesting to hear there’s some decent quality TexMex over in Chiang Mai.

      PS: Berlin is fantastic! A wonderfully international and exciting city.

    When I lived outside of Texas, I could usually get decent BBQ. What I missed was good BBQ sauce. I also missed good TexMex, although I’m starting to prefer a more southwestern/New Mexican take on food. As I get older, the less I enjoy my food drowned in chili…

      mmmmm chili! You’re right about the BBQ sauce though — it’s always what I go after when I’m home in DFW.
