Why This Year Will be Terrifying

Why terrifying? Well, first of all I’m quitting an excellent job, selling almost all my stuff and then packing my life away into a backpack for a trip around the world. If that’s not enough to scare you, then call me uncle.

Oh wait, I’m going to be an uncle, too.

Obviously this year’s going to be a big one. I remember my dad showing me some form from the IRS which details how much money he made every year of his life up to that point. There were two years that stood out on his during which he made $42 and $0 respectively because he was traveling the world. And 2010 is going to be that year for me. It’s going to be the year I remember. It’ll probably be my ATM pin code five years from now.

Sure, it’s going to be scary. But I’m more excited than anything.

I'm in the same boat, Adam! Just started selling everything off. I don't know about you, but I cant wait to look back on these years when we made nothing and became everything.
Keep in touch- love to see where you're going.

  3. Adam says:

thanks! Just can be a little scary when you start to look too far down the road.

All the best, I’m somewhat a few steps behind you for my RTW trip however I am enjoying your blog :)

  4. Adam says:

    Well said!

I'll be posting my tentative itinerary in the next few days. (I keep saying that, but this time I mean it!) I'm planning on hitting up Greece in August!

  5. Suzi says:

I can't wait to follow you around the world! :-)

  6. Adam says:

… and I can't wait to go all around the world!

  7. Adam says:

Thanks for the comment Shannon! I've been reading your blog for the past month or so (since I started this one myself). I'm getting more and more excited each and every day. Once I book my first flight outta here, I know I won't be able to withstand the excitement!

  8. Suzi says:

Don't go too fast or it'll all be over & you'll be back in the work-a-day world, wondering “What happened?”

  9. ShannonOD says:

Congrats on the decision to make the leap and take a RTW trip – I got back from mine a few months ago and have never regretted for a single second my year of travels :-)

  10. Man, I did the same thing and left September 16th. YOU SIR are going to love it and never look back. One piece of advice… Monitor your funds in the beginning. Everyone I spoke with goes “insane” first few months then tappers down to a more sustainable and arguably enjoyable experience.

P.S: If you hang with too many 1 – 2 week travelers expect to go be tempted to go out, a lot. ;)

    Have fun!

  11. adventurerob says:

All the best with it, might be scary, but I'm sure it'll also be one of the best years of your life :-)

  12. Chris says:

Good luck mate I hope to run into you somewhere along the road when I head off in June

  13. Adam says:

Yes definitely! Either way, my goal is to end up in Australia and stay as long as they'll let me :)

  14. Adam says:

Thanks for commenting & for the tip!! As of today, I'll probably be in Eastern Europe at the beginning of my trip which I expect to be pretty pricey compared to the rest of my travels…

  15. gotpassport says:

congrats to you on making that decision and going for it. looking forward to following your travels.

  16. Dave says:

    You mean terrifyingly awesome!

  17. Chris says:

You actually made the best decision of your life with one difference: you will NEVER regret it :-)

  18. Suzi says:

    Love the attitude!! :-)

  19. Adam says:

Oh trust me that's on my to-do list! Also, I tried to do that a few years ago when I was dead-set on living in London but failed miserably.

  20. Adam says:

    Right on!

  21. Adam says:

Thanks for stopping by Chris. That's the idea – no regrets!

  22. Suzi says:

Funny, Chris – we thought you were the one with the accent (which I absolutely adore, by the way!) :-)

  23. Chris says:

haha well you'll just have to marry a lovely aussie gal and your set to stay forever :)

  24. Chris says:

I won't be picky I'm a sucker for a girl with an accent so any country is fine with me :)

  25. Chris says:

hahaha I have this argument with my american friends all the time. I keep saying that I sound normal and its them with the accent but they won't buy it.

Oh Suzi have you been eavesdropping on me again, I thought we talked about this :P

  26. Anna Ikeda says:

Congratulations. I left home with just a backpack in November of 1991 and haven't been back since. So be careful. Your one RTW trip may morph into something totally unexpected. :)

  27. Stephanie says:

It's funny, I'm kind of looking forward to the terrifyingness. It seems healthy, it means you are challenging yourself and not just sticking to the status quo. Terrifying= you will definitely remember this year.

When are you leaving for your trip again?

  28. Adam says:

My departure is tentatively scheduled for April 15. Life would be boring without challenges!

  29. Adam says:

That's what my Dad is afraid of! But I'm totally okay with living the unexpected.
