Schwerin, the capital of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is an old city, on the beautiful lake of the same name. When to Visit

Though winters in Schwerin can be cold and wet, the city rarely sees snow due to its proximity to the sea and there is still a lot to do that’s indoors during winter.

Summers in Schwerin are much nicer obviously, with the opportunity to enjoy its outside spaces, most notably the lakes and castle gardens. Fall can be beautiful too, with the changing colors and sunny days.

Top Things To See

Schwerin Castle – This castle which dates back to the 10th century is probably one of the most scenic places I’ve been to in Germany! You can pay to tour inside it, or just admire it from the outside, which is pretty cool. It has a nice gift shop that’s worth checking out too.

Galerie Alte & Neuer Meister – This impressive collection of oil paintings by Flemish masters may seem out of place in Schwerin, but given the background of how it was collected (by eccentric 18th century dukes from the region), it starts to make sense. Some of the pieces are extremely funny, even today!

Although it’s a small city, taking a tour around Schwerin will save you time and get you in to some areas of the city you might otherwise overlook, so it’s definitely worth you time to consider one. Take a look at this selection of Schwerin tours.

LGBTQ – Gay Schwerin Travel Guide

Schwerin is a small city, and doesn’t really have anything in the way of gay nightlife. If in need of some queer spaces, head instead to Hamburg or Berlin, Germany’s two largest cities which are teeming with fun things to do for LGBT travelers.
