Amsterdam’s Room Mate Aitana Hotel is a cool and convenient choice for a city break

HotelTonight Review: Room Mate Aitana in Amsterdam (cool & convenient design hotel)

SPONSORED — I didn’t arrive to the hotel until late on Sunday. After a long party weekend which included late-nights and early-mornings, I was looking forward to my check-in at the Room Mate Aitana hotel. I’ve been to a handful of their other properties in Spain (mostly to visit their bars), so when I saw the property listed on my HotelTonight app, I knew I needed to book it.

I’ve been using the HotelTonight app around the world for the past few years and it’s become one of my favorite travel apps for its great deals on last-minute hotel purchases. For a notoriously bad travel planner, it’s a great tool to have.

Hotels listed on HotelTonight are curated and each option is labeled with keywords like “hip” or “business” which gives an easy quick glimpse of what crowd the hotel attracts.

The Room Mate hotel brand, born out of Spain, has attracted LGBTQ travelers since the European-based chain started. The hotel’s morality and ethos is reflected not just in their open and friendly attention to service, but also in their design and amenities.

Every hotel room at a Room Mate property features a copy of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights—a clear and direct signal that this a property for E V E R Y O N E. Personally, when I find bibles in my hotel rooms, I’m instantly turned off, so to stumble on a copy of the UN Declaration at my bedside table is a welcome respite. It’s non-controversial, unique, and actually a pretty invigorating and inspirational read.

The Room Mate Aitana hotel is conveniently located, about a 10-12 easy minute walk to the Amsterdam Centraal train station; no taxi necessary. My plan for my short trip in Amsterdam was to visit a bit of the city, but also to explore beyond Amsterdam and visit some other Dutch cities. The location was perfect. It’s just outside the over-touristic hotspots in the city center, but close to the train station and near enough to the Harleemstraat area of the popular Jordaan neighborhood (my favorite part of Amsterdam for shopping!).

When I checked into the hotel, I was given a room on the second floor. That same night I received an email asking me to fill out a short survey about the check-in process and for any feedback on the hotel so far. Normally I ignore those kinds of things, but after a long and weary weekend, I actually answered the survey.

A little comment I made about the room being pretty dark triggered something, because the next morning I received a phone call from the customer service desk offering me the chance to switch to a brighter room and for some extra lamps. That kind of quick hospitality was a welcome surprise, so I took them up on their offer and switched rooms later that day.

It ended up being an excellent series of events because I ended up in an especially hip room which was—approximately—a gazillion times brighter. (I don’t know about you, but I just hate bare white walls and dark rooms when I’m traveling.) Both rooms I had the chance to experience at the Room Mate Aitana were large and spacious—and for someone like myself looking for a comfortable space to chill out post-party, it was the perfect amount of space.
