Freiburg Travel Guide
The ultimate guide to the best things to do and see in Freiburg
Known as the Jewel of the Black Forest in Baden-Württenburg, Freiburg is a picture-perfect German town is surrounded by beautiful nature and offers great food and sights to visitors. Don’t miss it! Start here with my basic Freiburg travel tips, or jump down below to read my latest Freiburg travel blogs.
When to Visit
Like most of Germany, Freiburg has four very distinct seasons. Summer is hot and humid and is when the town gets its most visitors, but I think autumn is also a great time to visit, as everything looks prettier under the golden hue of the leaves.
In winter, there are Christmas markets and it will often snow and get cold, but then again Freiburg is know as Germany’s sunniest cities and with the best winter weather! Spring can also be nice, but it will be chilly and you may not be able to enjoy the outdoors as much as other times of year.
Top Things To Do
Visit the Museum für Neue Kunst – Focusing on works by 20th century expressionists such as Otto Dix and Oskar Kokoschka, this museum is housed in an equally interesting Neobaroque building.
Try the local beers – Freiburg is home to multiple breweries with long traditions of making beer. Hausbrauerei Feierling is a good option, especially in summer when their lovely beer garden becomes a kind of communal living room for the town.
Climb the Schlossberg – Opposite the Schwabentor, one of the old gates to the city, is a wooded footpath leading uphill to the Schlossberg, which offers great views over the city and surrounding countryside. Alternatively, take the cable car up for an easier option!
Freiburg Tours
Although it’s a relatively small city, taking a tour around Freiburg will save you time and get you in to some areas of the city you might otherwise overlook, so it’s definitely worth you time to consider one.
LGBTQ – Gay Freiburg Travel Guide
Though Germany is generally speaking a pretty easy place for gay travelers, Freiburg is a small town and doesn’t have any gay nightlife to speak of specifically. If you’re in search of somewhere to go out at night and meet other queers, head over to Zurich or Basel in Switzerland or even Strasbourg in France – they’re not far away!

Freiburg Hotel Deals
Freiburg has plenty of cool and quirky hotels, as well as all the big chains you’d expect. They’ll likely get full when there’s a conference or special event in town, so definitely consider booking in advance.
