I’ve always loved cinema. And curling up on the couch on a rainy day is one of my favorite things to do when there’s nowhere to go. Rainy days are such a great opportunity to cozy up indoors and watch a good movie. Whether you’re in the mood for an epic adventure, a classic musical, or a heartwarming comedy, there are plenty of great films to choose for those most coziest of days.
Because it’s easy to get distracted on rainy days, and let your eyes wander out the window to whatever storm might be raging outside, I find rewatching old favorites is the way to go. I’ve written below my list of my rainy day go-tos, including some of the most beloved franchises and timeless classics.
Note: I think a lot of these rainy day movie options are equally good for winter & snow days, too. When the weather’s shit, it’s just so comforting to put on a guilty pleasure movie.
What makes a movie perfect for a rainy day?
For me, a rainy day movie offers an escape from the doldrums of a shit weather day. So, what kind of movie gives you the opportunity to feel free from reality? Fantasy, of course! Epic fantasy and sci-fi movies are the perfect escape!
I also find cheery, bright movies are a good option when it’s grey and wet outside. That’s personally why I often end up putting on a musical—whether classic Rogers & Hammerstein musicals, or newer ones like Pitch Perfect, La La Land, or even Mamma Mia!
Favorite & Classic Rainy Day Movies
Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most beloved and iconic fantasy franchises of all time. Directed by Peter Jackson, the trilogy consists of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. I still remember the midnight movie showings when they were first released, which is probably why I enjoy them on cold, rainy days.
