Italy is a great European destination for year-round travel. In the summer, the country is full of tourists with long queues at just about every museum, every tourist attraction and overflowing the many pedestrian streets and Italian small towns across the country. So, if you choose to visit in the winter, you can expect shorter queues and less crowds but the same delicious food and amazing attractions.
Because it’s easy to travel around Italy on train (use Trenitalia.com to book tickets in advance), it’s possible to add several day trips onto a simple city break in Italy. But you should consider booking a multi-day tour through the country, as well, because each city has its own unique culture. There are huge differences between Milan and Florence, or Rome and Venice, or the north to the south. Italy was unified as a country from countless kingdoms and separate states. Even today, the Vatican is its own country-capital in the center of Rome—maintaining its independence. So, if you’re planning on visiting Italy for anything more than a weekend, make sure you visit multiple villages or Italian cities. Even a one-week Italy itinerary will help you explore the highlights!
Italy is one of the world’s most romantic countries which makes it a great destination for LGBTQ couples. While parts of Italy are still very conservative (and religious), the country has seen many recent successes for LGBTQ equality. Big cities and tourist hotspots like Milan, Rome and Venice are generally safe and comfortable for LGBTQ travelers, even if it’s hard to find any gay events, bars or nightlife in each city. Bologna is worth visiting as well because it’s a large university town with a young, hip population.
